How To Prevent Bruising After Dermal Fillers

One of the biggest concerns expressed by prospective clients is the possibility of bruising/contusion after cosmetic dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle injections. You invest a lot of time, money and care into choosing the best cosmetic nurse and the best product for you, the last thing you need to be worried about is bruising after your treatment.

Whilst some people bruise more easily than others, whether or not your treated area will show bruising after your treatment is highly individual. Also keep in mind that the type of cosmetic treatment and the amount of filler you receive may also influence whether you bruise or not.

Follow this list of tips to minimise bruising from your treatment:

Before Your Treatment

  • Avoid supplements with blood-thinning properties such as fish oil, garlic, ginger, ginkgo biloba, ginseng, green tea and Vitamin E at least 48-72 hours before treatment if possible.
  • Avoid (non-essential) blood thinning medications such as aspirin. People taking blood thinning medication regularly will already understand the increased risk of bruising as a side effect. Seek medical advice before stopping any prescription medications prior to your treatments.
  • Arnica (a homeopathic supplement) can be taken before treatment for those who are worried about bruising.
  • Avoid alcohol 24 hours prior – alcohol’s anti-platelet effects increase your chance of bruising (hence the unexplainable bruises you find after a very big night out!)

During Treatment

  • Ice. Applying ice packs prior to injectables and fillers helps to numb the area and constricts the blood vessels.
  • Ensure your Registered Cosmetic Nurse applies a numbing agent first. This will make bruising less likely and make you more comfortable

After Your Treatment

  • No exercise for 24-48 hours. Physical activity increases your heart rate and blood flow. Minimal blood flow assists damaged capillaries in the repair process.
  • Ice. Applying ice cools and soothes the area. Go with something squishy that can be moulded like a gel pack or some frozen peas.
  • Elevation – use an extra pillow on the night of your treatment to prevent bruising as you lay flat.
  • Do not squeeze or rub your face (unless instructed to do so by your doctor/dermal nurse). Rubbing can move the carefully placed product to other parts of your face. Your Registered Cosmetic Nurse may demonstrate a gentle massaging technique if they feel it is required, however always adhere to their specific advice.

Although these tips can significantly reduce the chances of bruising after injectables and fillers, it is recommended that you schedule your cosmetic injectable treatment at least 2 weeks before any significant event on the off chance that you may bruise.

An experienced, professional Registered Cosmetic Nurse will be able to advise you if your skin shows immediate signs of impending bruising and can assist you with further ways to treat this and reduce the need for heavy concealer following your treatment.
